Ocean Beach, Denmark WA: Why check it out?

There’re plenty of footprints on Ocean Beach’s sandy shores for good reason.

Easily the most iconic beach in the beautiful region town of Denmark, WA, Ocean Beach is so picturesque that some will purely come and go for the view from its multiple viewpoints. From surfing to sandboarding, swimming to sun bathing, it’s a beachgoers dream, even in the winter months.

Ocean Beach offers quality surf for those inclined to get a solid ride in the Great Southern Ocean. The banks are decent throughout the year, with summer swell getting plenty of kiddos and longboarders into the water. Swimming in the turquoise waters is nothing short of dreamy, and even a walk on the soft sand creates an experience you’ll remember. The views are outstanding, no matter where you are.

If you’re staying active on your holiday, Saturday mornings at 7am sees many healthy locals enjoying a beach exercise class right in front of the surf. You’re welcome to join by arriving bright and early at the bottom of the stairs from the Ocean Beach Look-Out carpark.

Where is Ocean Beach?

Around 5km south of Denmark’s town center, Ocean Beach is easily accessible via Ocean Beach Road. Even the journey to Denmark’s most popular beach offers awesome scenic views, including the Wilson Inlet culminating in ample parking areas near the beach, ensuring a hassle-free visit.

Parking is found on the hill above the surf club, which is as of this writing undergoing major renovations (completion expected October 2025). A smaller carpark can be found at the Ocean Beach Lookout, by driving alongside the Prawn Rock Channel (just north of Ocean Beach) and heading up the hill towards the lookout. It’s here you’ll find a near-magical walkway to the stairs down to the beach.

Things to do at Ocean Beach

Swimming and water activities

Beyond surfing, the beach is hugely popular for kayaking, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboarding, attracting both locals and tourists to get amongst it.

Surfing

Renowned for its sand breaks, Ocean Beach is a haven for surfers of pretty much every level.

Ocean Beach is favoured by longboarders, its selection of peaks providing relatively chilled take offs and long rides. The right hander off the point is very fun and often the first port of call for those hitting the ocean. Newbies to this great sport can get a less from the great Mike Neunuebel, a Californian expat, and because there’s a long sandbar running through the water, even those who fear the ocean will find plenty of comfort learning to catch their first wave.

All that said, the waves can certainly get hectic. With the right swell, head-to-double-head surf is common. Providing the banks are in decent shape, the odd barrel won’t go astray. The author’s honest truth is that it can feel sharky in the autumn and winter months, so go with a crew and always keep an eye on the weather report. If your shark radar is pinging, proceed with caution. The men in the grey suits do frequent the area.

The prime surfing season extends from October to June, offering ideal conditions for enthusiasts. The Denmark Surf Life Saving Club provides a safe environment for those new to the sport and the general vibe from all surfers out in the water in Denmark is typically very welcoming.

As always, respect the locals.

Beach walks and trails

But of course, if you prefer getting your blood pumping on land, the surrounding areas offer picturesque trails and walks, including the Bibbulman Track. The stretch of trail alongside the Wilson Inlet is absolutely gorgeous.

When to visit

Ocean Beach experiences mild temperatures year-round. The average high ranges from 20.1°C, with water temperatures around 21.3°C, making it awesome for beach activities, in and out of the water.

This wild and remote part of WA is prone to surprise bouts of rain, wind and storms, so check out the forecast semi-regularly to ensure you’re not caught out.

Is Ocean Beach dog friendly?

Yes, Ocean Beach welcomes canine companions. The adjacent Prawn Rock Channel Dog Beach is designated for off-leash fun, while other areas may require dogs to be on-leash. Facilities like dog waste bags are available in certain areas.

Nearby amenities and cafes

While in the area, you won’t be starved of great experiences. Of course, some incredible beaches surround the area, including Ocean Beach, Lights Beach and the tourist-friendly Green’s Pool and Elephant Rock. Countless walking and hiking trails line the region like arteries, with the Bibbulmun Track accessible from Ocean Beach Road. And Denmark’s town is perfect for a stroll, with a tonne of local outlets catering to shoppers, diners and those in search of the perfect cuppa. I highly recommend checking out Bartholomew’s Meadery, producing an unbeatable selection of honeys (chilli honey for the win), handmade ice cream and mead.

Accommodation near Ocean Beach, WA

In town, you obviously have plenty of options. But I’ve found that staying alongside Ocean Beach Road gives you the access to nearby attractions, adventures and coastline that explorers dream of when visiting Denmark.

Rainbow House

Situated between Denmark town and Ocean Beach, Rainbow House offers spacious, family-friendly, fully self-contained holiday villas in a peaceful setting overlooking Wilson Inlet. The property features generous verandahs perfect for barbecues and enjoying the superb water views.

The owner, Irene, will make you feel right at home, just as she did me, my wife and nine-month-old daughter. Our favourite part is the location. It sits just a 200m stroll from the famous Bibbulmun Track, taking you for a beautiful trail walk along the inlet. You’ve a perfect view of the sunrise, when the birds put you in that early-morning trance that you just don’t want to snap out of.

If you’re bringing your boat, a launch ramp is only 1km away. Cyclists will love the off-road cycle path connecting Denmark to Ocean Beach. If you’re without a bike, Monkey Rock Mountain Bike Shop—on the main road that cuts through Denmark town—will sort you out with wheels.

BIG4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park

Just a short stroll from the iconic Ocean Beach, the BIG4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park offers a variety of accommodation options to suit all holiday needs. Guests can choose from Superior 3 or 2-bedroom chalets, villas or cabins set in pristine surrounds. The park also provides manicured, large flat sites welcoming all sizes of caravans and tents, perfect for a bush camping experience with modern facilities.

Facilities include two large, well-appointed camp kitchens with TV and heating, three ablution blocks, a laundry, numerous barbecues with seating throughout the park, free in-park Wi-Fi, and a courtesy bus to and from Boston Brewery and Willoughby Park. For things to do with (or without) the kids, there’s a jumping pillow, playground, pedal cart hire, mini-golf, as well as volleyball, tennis and basketball courts.

The park’s also pet-friendly, making it a great choice for families traveling with pets.

Final tips before you go

  • Channel dig-out: Every year the channel is dug out from the mouth of the ocean to allow the Wilson Inlet to discharge into the sea. It transforms the entire bay, effectively closing off half of the walkable area once the water feeds into the ocean. Depending on which time of year you go, Ocean Beach’s beautiful shoreline has multiple faces.
  • Safety first: Always be mindful of ocean conditions and adhere to safety guidelines, especially when jumping in the water. The Great Southern is home to a great deal of local fauna, including vast marine life—if you’re worried about sharks, be aware that they occasionally pass through this area.
  • Pack essentials: It’s occasionally overcast in Denmark but don’t let that fool you—the UV gets very high. Bring sunscreen, hats and plenty of water to stay protected and hydrated during your visit. Always be prepared and pack the right gear for your adventure.
  • Respect local regulations: Ensure you follow local guidelines, especially concerning dog-friendly areas and environmental conservation efforts. Walk only in areas where there’s an obvious path, being careful of restoration zones or rehabilitation sites.
